New Braunfels History and Facts
New Braunfels was founded in 1845 by German settlers and is located 46 miles south of Austin and 27 miles north of San Antonio in Comal county. The City of New Braunfels is home to many world famous tourist attractions including the Guadalupe River, The Natural Bridge Caverns/Wildlife Ranch and the country's number one waterpark, Schlitterbahn. Located just minutes from downtown is the Historic District of Gruene where you can enjoy wine tasting, shopping, dining and dancing. On March 12, 2007, the City Council declared the population to be over 50,000 with the population estimated to be 51,066.
